Residents can take part in a free 12-week fitness program funded by ActiveKIT

Expressions of interest for The Active and Healthy Bundaberg Program are open this week, bringing a range of health and fitness options to a targeted demographic within the community over a 12-week period.

With two successful cohorts already delivered, Council is pleased to announce that a third will commence on Monday 29 August, running until Sunday 20 November.

The primary demographic targeted in the initiative is adults aged 25 to 35 who are experiencing socio-economic disadvantage, with a focus on female engagement.

Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Cr Vince Habermann said the previous cohorts which completed their 12-week program over the past year saw fantastic results.

“All participants had varying drivers for being involved, and likewise they each had differing aspects of the program that they felt benefitted them most,” he said.

“Feedback from one participant in particular was how extremely grateful she was for her opportunity to be involved and was extremely proud of her efforts to lose almost 15kg during the program.”

Cr Habermann said the third Active and Healthy Bundaberg cohort would begin its journey in August and would work with various health and fitness providers along the way.

“The participants will undertaking an independent health assessment which informs the development of a customised health and wellbeing ‘script’ for them to utilise not only in the program, but also in life,” he said.

“Participants will attend workshops and consultations facilitated by local health and wellbeing providers that cover three principal areas of physical health, nutrition, and wellbeing.

“The idea is they will gain knowledge about overall healthy habits across the three areas of physical fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness and wellbeing which will enable them to modify their habits and behaviours and lead them to becoming healthier overall.”

Health and wellbeing services will broadly fall under the categories of physical health, nutrition, and mental wellbeing.

Examples of Active and Healthy Bundaberg services that will be available include:
• Exercise within a gym or similar functional fitness environment
• Whole of body strength and cardio training
• Yoga
• Nutrition
• Meditation or mindfulness
• Naturopathy
• Personal Training
• Hypnotherapy

This Active and Healthy Bundaberg program is funded by the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Health and Wellbeing Queensland under the ActiveKIT program.
